For anyone who is out and about on Sunday, I will be showing my cakes at Greenwoods in Stock. They are having an Open Day and Wedding Fayre, and it is only about 100 yards from my 'Shop'. So if you would like to taste my cake and see some dummy cakes (I will be bringing a Helterskelter and a Drape cake) and have a chat in informal circumstances, pop in and see me.

I am sure there will be lots of other wedding related things there, and it is Stock Flower Festival that weekend so you might like to have a look in at that too.

20120619-No 1 Birthday Cake.JPG

This was based on a 40th birthday cake I have in the birthday section of my website. Shaped like a Number 1 with primary coloured stars, some on wires, guaranteed to catch the eye of a baby, with the name Finley in blue also on wires.

20120618-Ballet Dancer Cake.JPG

This cake was made for a dancing teacher, but would also be appropriate for an older ballet student. There is a pair of sugar ballet slippers, a spray of pink roses and some stencilled dancers round the side. I made the stencils myself as I could not find any cutters or stencils ready made. It was all rather fun, and something I don't often make.

20120614-wedding car.JPG

This car was made as my contribution to the Chelmsford Branch Guild Table at Telford International Sugarcraft Exhibition in May. It is made of pastillage with chocolate seats and is based on a Sylvanian Family car that I bought my daughter when she was younger. It was one of those presents you buy because you want it not because the child necessarily does!

Later on I added a ribbon and bow to make it more or a wedding car and a sugar teddy bear chauffeur.

20120613-Ivory cake with embroidery.JPG

I rather like this cake. The embroidery on the sides was based on the embroidery on the bodice of the bride's dress and the dots were piped with sugarveil. It was neat and comapct. It was for a wedding at Crondon Park in April.

The extra 6 cupcakes left from 'Happy Birthday Brian' were decorated with these delicate lacy sugar butterflies and a few blossoms.

A set of 2 dozen cupcakes in honour of Brian's birthday, spelling out 'Happy Birthday Brian', decorated with butterflies and blossoms in blue. These were vanilla sponge with blue cupcake cases and white sugarpaste tops. I loaned Brian's wife a wire cupcake stand to display them on, in the restaurant, and she provided a little cupcake bag each so the guests could take them home.

20120608-Cutting the Cake.JPG

Charlotte and Liam sent me this picture of them cutting their cake at Newland Hall early in May with these words:

"Hi Melanie

Just wanted to drop you a message to say thank you for the most beautiful wedding cake all of our guests commented on how stunning it was.

I have attached a few photos so you can see how great it looked."

It's lovely to get feedback, as I deliver cakes at venues before the weddings, and don't get to see the couple's reaction very often.

This was one of my helterskelter style cakes that I made for a wedding at Spain's Hall in Finchingfield, Essex last month. The cake is in sponge, with white icing and and detailed with pale blue handmade sugar roses, edged with edible silver glitter.

I was asked to make a particular favourite handbag for a 21st birthday cake. I took a picture of the original (below) when the client visited and then made it in cake. What a fun commission!

20120605-Black and White Brooch.JPG

www.ferriscakes.co.uk

This 4-tier cake in vanilla sponge is iced in white sugarpaste with black sugar ribbon and bow with a brooch. It is such a classic design that although the bride ordered it 2 years before her wedding it still looked completely up to the minute in fashion.

It also had a handmade sugar bride and groom on the top, dressed to look like the real life bride and groom.

The wedding was at Quendon Parklands in April.

The bride sent me this note:

"Afternoon Melanie,

I just wanted to mail you to say a huge thank you for making our cake for our wedding day. The cake not only looked stunning but it’s tasted amazing! It was more than I could ever have hoped for.

Thank you so much :O)"

20120604-Las Vegas Cake.JPG

www.ferriscakes.co.uk

This cake was entirely designed by the bride herself. She came to me with an idea and photographs. She was married in Las Vegas, out in the desert, and wanted the sides of the cake to be hand painted desert scenes. Apparently there are no cacti there so the traditional image of the three-pronged cactus is wrong, just brush and red earth with grey hills in the background.

On top I made a sugar 'Welcome to Las Vegas' sign, and the bride provided a glamorous 'Wilton' bride and groom. I delivered the cake to the post-wedding party at The Ivory Rooms in Billericay, Essex.
