20121231-Suitcase Cake.JPG

This was the third suitcase wedding cake I made this year. The colour scheme was Cadbury's purple and there is a handmade sugar bride and groom sitting on top dressed as the actual bride and groom were. This was for a wedding at Crondon Park, Stock, Essex in October.

I have made several suitcase cakes this year. This one was 2-tiers, with a bride and groom supplied by the clients, and an unusual selection of sugar flowers: roses with a hint of lilac colour, fern and hydrangea. It was for a wedding at Mulberry House near Ongar in Essex in October, and the bride happened to be there when I delivered it, in the pouring rain, and was delighted with it.

Here is a the Christmas Cake I made for my in-laws this year. I don't make Christmas cakes commercially, but I do enjoy making one special one each year.

This is a hexagonal fruit cake covered with royal icing rather than sugarpaste, as I prefer the taste, with a poinsettia, the outline of which is piped in black royal icing and then filled with coloured piping gel, to give the impression of stained glass on the top, and a roundel with a different stained glass picture on each of the six sides. An angel and a red cardinal are on view in the second picture, but there was also a nativity scene, a candle, a star and a Christmas tree. All the corners/edges are piped with royal icing tear drops.

This was an 8" fruit birthday cake for the mother of a lovely friend of mine. It had marzipan and white icing, a 70 made of pink icing and two sprays of sugar flowers, including roses, lily of the valley, blossoms and variegated ivy leaves. The inscription was piped in Royal Icing and the cake was finished off with a pink sugar ribbon round the sides, with a bow at the front.

When Pam ordered a chocolate birthday cake with a Justin Bieber theme she brought me some edible pictures of Justin Bieber to go on it. So I made them into lollipops! Here is Amy's 18th birthday cake with white and milk chocolate cigarillos, white chocolate ruffles, milk chocolate roses and the pictures of Justin Bieber. Just before it was collected I also added strawberries dipped in milk chocolate.

Here is a close up of the baby converse style trainers I made for the Baby Reveal Cake. They are so sweet. I have a lovely e-mail from the client telling me how well the party went and how much she liked the cake

"Just wanted to send you a quick message to say thank you SO much for our baby reveal cake last weekend. The cake was absolutely amazing and even though we knew the sex ourselves, cutting the cake and revealing it to our families was so exciting! When we cut the cake, the whole room cheered and screamed - it was a wonderful way to share the news with our family. Everyone is still talking about the party and how amazing the cake looked and how great it tasted!

Thank you very much for making our evening so special and for preparing the cake in such a short space of time."

20121220-Baby Reveal Cake.JPG

www.ferriscakes.co.uk

On Saturday I made my first baby reveal cake. This is for a special celebration held when a mother to be has had a scan to see what gender the baby will be. The cake is either blue or pink inside, but it is not until the cake is cut that the gender of the baby is 'revealed'.

On Friday evening, about 6.00, I was handed a sealed envelope and inside it said 'The baby appears to be a little girl'. I had already made a pink cake and a blue cake, so the blue cake went in the freezer and I iced and decorated the pink cake in white icing with a tiny pair of pink MaryJane shoes and blue converse style trainers. When the father came to pick up the cake he admitted that he and 'mum' had peeked and knew what the baby was going to be, but they were having a big party for the family and that the cutting of the cake was the central feature of the event.

I will post a close-up shot of the converse style trainers soon.

20121219-Champagne Bucket Cake.JPG

This was a huge cake (the champagne bottle is life size) and great fun to make. It was chocolate cake inside, six layers in all, with chocolate ganache and orange curd between each layer, the ice cubes were Fox's Glacier Mints and even the cloth was made of sugar.
